Colorado Wine Room's Latest NewsSpring Forth
Linus: "He is?" CB: "Not HE is, IT is." Linus: "It is what?" CB: "It is COMING." Linus: "What is coming" CB: "Spring is coming!" Linus: "He is?" Says the Peanut Gallery: "Good Grief!" Spring is officially here, ever since the night was exactly as long as the day on March 20th, the vernal equinox. Since then, the days have been getting longer by just a bit in the morning and a bit at night. That trend will continue until the summer solstice on June 21st. The resulting warming trend is what gets the dormant grapevines waking up and getting ready to make grapes. It's a bit of a nerve-wracking time for growers. Although some varieties in some locations have already burst forth, it's good that most of the grape vines are still waking up, because there's still potential for frost damage. The way to keep the buds dormant, and therefore less susceptible to frost damage is lower temperature, so cooler is actually better than warmer during this most risky part of the growing season. The buds are definitely swelling and starting to break out now, preparing to spring forth in a bold move that will hopefully continue through summer. The growing season is a pressure cooker for the vines. If they come out too early, they risk freezing their microscopically flower-laden buds. If they come out too late they run out of time before a fall freeze, which of course stops photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis, the vine can't ripen the grapes any more. Ahh, the life of a vine.
Rocky Mountain PBS will be broadcasting its live fundraising auction from the Colorado Wine Room's tasting facility on April 28th. If you'd like to be seen milling about in the background, they will be auctioning "on location" from Noon to Midnight. Those of you with young kids can appreciate, as we do, that Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George and Maya and Miguel all need support in their effort to keep our kids safely, sanely entertained and edumacated. In truth, PBS does a wonderful job of providing great family programming, so get ready to "bid early and bid high". If you're looking for some entertainment, tune in from 6-8 pm, as our very own winemaker Glenn Foster of Talon Winery auctions off numerous items. Also on this day: Wines Fatten Tires Talon wines, made right here at the Colorado Wine Room, will be available by the glass this year at the Fruita Fat Tire Fundraiser for COPMOBA The Colorado Wine Room is giving back to the local mountain bike community again this year by donating funds to the Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Association, aka COPMOBA, from the sale of their Rock Red Wine. The Rock Red label was created to celebrate world-class biking and winemaking on the Western Slope. This year's Rock Red is a blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc. It's very fruit-driven, light in the mouth with cedar and cherries, a slight spritz, with a bit of a hard edge in the finish. We've found that most people like the wine quite a bit - it's not just a cool label. On the back of each bottle, consumers are advised to “Enjoy the local flavor, but don’t eat dirt!” Cheers!Want More News and Info? Check out our E-News Back Issues |
