Colorado Wine Room's Latest News

Changing of the Guard

On January 12th, Talon Winery bought three wine brands in Palisade, along with a fully equipped production facility with outstanding capacity.  Fred & Connie Strothman, now both in their 70’s, were going to shut down the business, but it was going to break their hearts.  They’ve put 12 years of dedication into Confre Cellars, so they made us an offer we couldn’t refuse – in the best of ways.

This is a huge step for us, so if we miss a month or two of the E-News, please forgive us.  We’ll be busy making wine and getting a handle on five tasting rooms.  Yep, we’ll be at five retail outlets, including two at St. Kathryn Cellars, the Meadery of the Rockies, the Colorado Wine Room, and Honeyville in Durango.

The purchase involves two properties.  The first and original building is the Meadery of the Rockies on 6 & 50 in Palisade, right across the street from Plum Creek Cellars.  This is where all the winemaking takes place.  The other property is the St. Kathryn Cellars building up by Highway 70, right next to Grande River Vineyards.  This property has two tasting rooms in it – one for St. Kathryn, and another for Confre Cellars, which are mostly fruit wines.

The deal has been in the works for about 6 weeks.  It moved along extremely quickly thanks to motivated parties.  Fred & Connie have created an astonishing number of unique and highly popular wines, mainly based on honey wine, or mead.  There are also quite a number of exciting and healthful fruit wines, not the least of which is the Pomegranate, which absolutely seems to walk off the shelves.  Our intent is to continue these products and add a few of our own.

What’s it all mean to you?  It means winemaker Glenn Foster will go back to work as a full time Vintner.  He plans on making larger quantities of the traditionally styled grape wines of his upbringing under the Talon label in addition to all the fruit and honey wines of the new acquisition.  We hope you’ll stop by soon to taste the fruits of his labor, both in Fruita and Palisade.
