Fall Festival Season

With Fall comes grape harvest, winemaking and a slew of festivals.  Winefest 2006Fruita Dinosaur at Circle Park  came off with nary a hitch because we had GREAT help from our friends.  Thanks to Amber, Sean, Greg, Gregg, Kim, Kelvin, Sara, Judey, Miranda, Pete, Dusty and Grandma Lois.  You made it all happen.

Fruita Fall Fest was fabulous thanks the efforts of the Fruita Chamber of Commerce.  We poured glasses and tastes of numerous wines in "The Wine Cage", but our biggest hit was the hot wassail we served to the delight of those chilled by an untimely cold front.

In honor of Apple Jubilee, put on by the Museum of the West, we sought and found two delicious apple wines. From the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City comes a wine called Apple Blossom.  Made from both Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples, this wine is light, refreshing, and semi-sweet.  Mountain Spirit Winery, in Salida, makes an astonishing libation called Apple Ice Wine.  It's thick sweetness paired with it's bright acid makes this a wonderful, unusual dessert wine.  Both wines are available for a limited time at the Colorado Wine Room.

2005 Talon Viognier LabelFirst Release of Talon Viognier

The 2005 Talon Viognier label made its first public appearance at a Winemaker Dinner hosted by DMT Worldwide Culinary Adventures in September.   We poured several wines paired with artfully crafted gourmet cuisine.  A rare and delightful appearance by Steve Rhodes of S Rhodes Vineyards made this evening all the more special.

We made 45 cases of the 2005 Viognier, and now have about 2 cases left.  Fortunately, we fermented 500 gallons of very good 2006 Viognier grape juice obtained from Palisade.  This wine promises to be another fine example of what Viognier can do in the Grand Valley. The 2006 vintage will be released in early 2007.  We'll raise the alarm when it's available.

Bottling, Foiling & Rockin'
Bottling Rock Red WineIn August, a crew of stalworts bottled 218 cases of Rock Red Wine.   It is rounded and full flavored, fruit driven, reasonably soft, with a wee bit of a hard edge in theBottling Rock Red Wine  finish.  It's a proprietary blend of Merlot (77%) and Cabernet Franc (23%) from Palisade.  People are responding very well to this carefully crafted Colorado wine.  Rock Red is currently available at the Colorado Wine Room as well as Crossroads Wine & Spirits, Fisher's Liquor Barn and College Liquors.

Work Work Work!

But somebody's got to do it.  In October, we traveled to the front range in search of MORE OUTSTANDING WINE for our Wine Club members and customers.  Visiting wineries around the state, meetingGlenn & Jackie at Boulder Creek Winery with the owners and winemakers and sampling their wines has only confirmed our belief that Colorado winemakers are commited to quality.  At right is a picture of our head taster and Jackie Thompson of Boulder Creek Winery Jackie has a small winery outside of Boulder and makes around 3,000 cases per year.  We snatched up five cases of her 2003 Claret.  Primarily Cab Franc, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon this wine is very concentrated  with dark berry flavors; rich and full-bodied with a unique spicy twang that really adds a new dimension.

Thank You Wine Club Members!

Earlier this month, our wine club members gathered for an evening of hors d'ouvres paired with delicious Colorado wines.  There to help entertain, educate and provide stimulating interactions were winemakers Jenne Baldwin of Plum Creek Cellars and Rainer Thoma of Garfield Estates Winery.  Jenne and Rainer both gave presentations on their personal journeys in the wine business and the general approach of the wineries they work for.  Delectables were provided by DMT Worldwide Culinary Adventures.  Thanks to Jenne and Rainer for a making it a wonderful evening.  Special thanks to our Wine Club members for their continued support.
