Grape Harvest

Harvest Open House Celebration!

Mark your calendars for our upcoming Harvest Open House Celebration on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th during regular business hours – that’s 10:30 am to 5:30 pm on Saturday, and Noon -5 on Sunday. This is our way of throwing hats in the air with a primordial yawp, and raising our glasses to toast the luxury of locally fermented beverages. Yes, most of the grapes will be in, and reliable sources report that Talon Winery, here at the Colorado Wine Room, will be making its first sweet wine. The wine should be happily fermenting in the tanks by then, so you'll be able to see magic in the making. We'll be offering wine tasting and goodies as well as a 10% discount on all non-wine items. It's a great time to stock up on your fall favorites and sample several new releases. As always, you can mix and match a 12 bottle case for a 10% discount.

Talon Winery

Two Thousand Six Hundred and Four Thanks

Another momentous event has taken place at the Colorado Wine Room, home of Talon Winery. On September 2, 2007, a group of 15 highly committed, half-crazy volunteers gathered to help us bottle 217 cases of 2005 Talon Cabernet Sauvignon. That's 2,604 bottles, each and every one hand carried from one end of the line to the other, passing by hand from station to station with the utmost precision and care. Each of the five stations required at least one person, sometimes two or three pairs of hands. We bottled it all in about 3 hours. That's an average of about 14.5 bottles per minute, but we timed our peak performance at over 16 bottles per minute. That's pretty quick for semi-automatic equipment of this type. Obviously, we're very proud of our team. Our sincerest, heartfelt thanks go out to Kim and Gregg, Rocco, Jim, Rick, Brad, Greg, Doug, Jackie, John the Fish Guy, Paige, Michelle and Jim. Afterwards there was much backslapping and knee slapping as we enjoyed Pablo's Pizza, calzones and salads from across the street along with the wine, which was divine, by the way. Our next bottling will probably be a sweet Rosé either late this year or early next year. If you'd like to help, let us know. It's a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Release!

On September 2nd, 2007 Talon Winery released its latest bottling, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the second red wine we've bottled so far. It was grown and made here in the Grand Valley, blended and finished here in Fruita at the monstrously petite Talon Winery at the Colorado Wine Room. It's primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with a touch of Syrah and Merlot to round out the flavors. To some, the wine is a little rough around the edges, but to us and many of our customers so far, it's already very good. It's medium-bodied, rich, and robust with notes of blackberry and red currant. You can try it with a thick steak, a hearty pasta dish or enjoy sipping it near the fire. One of our favorite wine clichés is "No wine before its time – It's time!" If it tastes this good now, it's only going to get better over the next year or two when it will all be gone, so come get a case – it's cheaper by the dozen!

Hangin' 10

Wine Fest 2007 was a huge event for us this year. We took it on like a surfer takes on big waves and survived to tell the tale. Again, we couldn't have done it without our amazingly energetic volunteers. A round of applause from us to you: Kim, Gregg, Rocco, Jim, Sharon, Kelvin, Sara, Jim, Liz, Regina and Craig, Kim and Kirk and John. The dry wines we poured were our three Talon wines: Viognier, Rock Red and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cabernet Franc from Steve Rhodes. We also served up four sweet wines that wouldn't have been at the Festival otherwise: the Riesling from The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City, always a big hit in its gorgeous blue bottle, and two wines from Mountain Spirit Winery in Salida, the Angel Blush, a blended apple, raspberry & pear wine, as well as, their Apple Ice wine, a very sweet dessert wine made exclusively from apples in an ice wine style. These wines and many more are available at the shop.
