Dear Colorado Wine Club Member, If you hadn’t seen it in the recent E-News, we’re having another of our Wine Tasting 101 classes this Saturday! Here’s the info, we still have space. Join us as we sip and swirl our way to a better understanding of wine and its complexities. We will discuss such wine concepts as dryness, fruitiness, tannins, acidity, and any other topics you’d like to discuss. We’ll spend an evening sampling a variety of fine Colorado wines followed by light hors d'oeuvres. Pre-registration with payment is required. Call 858-6330 to register. This class takes place here at the Colorado Wine Room on Saturday, July 21 from 7 to 9 pm. Cost is $30 for Wine Club members, $35 for all others. Go ahead and eat a decent meal beforehand, but we'll have crackers & tapenades available afterwards. Enclosed are your Wine Club bottles. This month’s wines for the Sweet Colorado Wine Club are: Elderberry Wine, Confre Cellars This wine is deeply colored, as are the berries of its origin. It is fragrant, quite sweet but not overly so, with a great deal of elderberry quality to it. There is a very mild tannic structure to it. We’ve been serving it slightly cold in this weather, but it could be served at room temperature in a cooler season. Try it with a bit of cheesecake, or over ice cream if you dare! Zero Below Dessert Wine, Whitewater Hill Vineyards This one is a fine example of a dessert wine. It’s a Late Harvest Chardonnay with 14.8% residual sugar. The grapes were harvested at 29.5 brix, which is very sweet. FYI, Brix measured in degrees and is approximately equivalent to percent sugar. It is usually measured with a hydrometer, which floats higher or lower depending on the quantity of solids dissolved in the liquid. Dissolved solids, in grape juice are almost all sugar, produced by the vines using sunlight as the original energy source. Isn’t this interesting stuff? As always, enjoy the wines in good health! Sincerely,
Glenn & Natalie Foster |
