Dear Colorado Wine Club Member,

Those members who were able to make the Wine Lover’s Dessert Night on Feb. 10th enjoyed a real treat, or rather several real treats.  We paired five desserts with five wines for 26 attendees and had a lovely time, thanks to Chef Diana Tarasiewicz.  We’ll continue to offer special food and wine events throughout the year, so keep your ears perked up, and check your email frequently.

On another note, we’re starting to enter the danger zone in the vineyard.  What we’re hoping for is not too much early warmth, which would cause the grapevines to come out of dormancy too soon, making them susceptible to late spring frostbite.  If you pray, pray for a smooth and easy warming trend from now ‘till the middle of May.

Land’s End Red, Reeder Mesa Vineyards

From out of the woodwork and under vehicles all over the Grand Valley (he used to be a mobile mechanic) comes winemaker Doug Vogel with a beautiful bottle of a red wine.  This unusual blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is also unusually good.  It won a gold medal at the 2006 Wine Fest Competition, and for good reason.  It’s rich with violets, plums and cedar, with soft, integrated tannins, giving it a long, smooth finish.  Wonderful with beef or try it with your favorite red-sauce Italian dish—ravioli, lasagna or manicotti. 

Port II, Graystone Winery

Here is a fine example of Colorado ruby port.  This well-crafted wine packs some serious flavor into a small, beautifully designed bottle.  As you may know, port is a fortified wine.  Not to be taken lightly at 19% alcohol, this dark, rich and luscious wine is sure to make an impression.  It’s made a very good impression on many judges in several competitions, as it has won many prestigious awards in the dessert wine category.  Try it with chocolate mousse or truffles after dinner.
