Dear Colorado Wine Club Member, The Grand Valley American Viticultural Area, or AVA, is well into the spring season now and moving quickly toward summer. There is, on average, about 10 inches of shoot growth on the vines, and soon, we’ll see the grape flowers begin to bloom. We think we’re in pretty good shape for this year’s crop. If all goes well, the season will conclude with a bountiful harvest, and another round of fabulous wines from this little known AVA. Enclosed are your Wine Club bottles. This month’s wines for the Vintner’s Choice Colorado Wine Club are: 2007 Rock Red, Talon Winery This year’s version of the Rock Red, in a slightly new label, is comprised of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a tiny bit of De Chaunac, a French American hybrid. Only about 250 cases were bottled, and the wine will not be available at liquor stores. It has been very well received as an easy drinking table wine. It’s got a fair amount of color and density, balanced by a healthy dollop of fruit character. This is a great introduction to red wines for those just starting to explore the world of robust reds. 2003 Merlot, Canyon Wind Cellars The ’03 Merlot from CWC is a fine example of a Colorado Bordeaux. It’s got several years of aging on it already, so much of its youthful exuberance has converted to mature strength and focus. Don’t hesitate to serve this to any wine snob with confidence. It’s a well-made wine from well-grown grapes. As always, enjoy the wines in good health! Sincerely,
Glenn & Natalie Foster |
